Australia will extend the Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa to 1,000 eligible Indian citizens each year within the next two years.

In order to be eligible for the Work and Holiday visa, applicants will have to be between the ages of 18 and 35 and have to have completed high school, plus two years of study after high school.

The Visa Application Charge is A$495, applicants will have to show that they have access to enough funds to support themselves in Australia (generally A$5000) and must have an onward ticket out of the country or enough funds to secure one.

The visa is a good way for young Indians to experience what living in Australia is like while earning money and paying for their trip, “[The Work and Holiday visa] is expected to contribute to both workforce requirements and to boost tourism to support our post-COVID recovery,” a statement from the Prime Minister’s office said.

Applicants must not have dependents travelling with them but are allowed to work as many hours as they want, they can enter and exit Australia as many times as they want for the 12 months the visa is active.

In order for Indian citizens to secure a second Work and Holiday visa, applicants must complete 3 months of specified subclass 462 work, this work is usually in remote areas and often in the agriculture or hospitality industry.

The visa allows for 4 months of study and the average visa processing time is 73 days.

The government has also announced a 30% increase to the cap on the number of Work and Holiday visas handed out to each country from 1 July 2022, it is unclear whether this will extend to India.

Australia and India signed the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement on the 2nd of April after more than a decade of negotiation between the two countries, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the agreement will help open a “big” door.

“This agreement has been built on our strong security partnership and our joint efforts in the Quad, which has created the opportunity for our economic relationship to advance to a new level,” he said.

Up to 500 young Brazilians per year will be able to live, work and study in Australia after the Government announced that they would be extending the work and holiday visa programme to the South American country in the 2022-23 budget handed down earlier this week.

The Work and Holiday visa (Subclass 462) allows a 12-month stay and costs AUD$495, the average processing time for the visa is 73 days and holders of this visa must complete 3 months of specified subclass 462 work in order to apply for a second visa.

Brazil joins other countries such as Peru, Portugal, the United States, Uruguay, Vietnam and China on the list of countries to which the visa is extended, applicants must be between the ages of 18 to 30. (inclusive)

75 per cent of applications lodged since 1 November 2021 were finalised in 70 days, the Department of Immigration said that processing times may increase as demand for the visa increases.

Australia had an estimated 46,450 Brazilian-born residents in 2018 – an increase of over 800 per cent since 2001 and many Brazilians living in the country have young friends and relatives nack home who could benefit enormously from the scheme.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Brazil was also the largest source of international students in Australia outside of Asia and the fifth-largest globally.

“Boosting our Work and Holiday program will also provide considerable support to key industries and regional communities as part of focused efforts in our economic recovery,” said federal Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs, Alex Hawke.

“Working Holiday-Makers generally stay longer, spend more money in Australia and travel further into regional areas than most other international visitors.”

These Work and Holiday visa places will be filled very quickly, come to Australia and enjoy a swim at the beach, see some of our beautiful wide-open spaces or set yourself up for work on an outback property with this very handy visa, your future in Australia awaits.

Backpackers can extend stay by volunteering in fire-ravaged communities as visa conditions are relaxed

Visa conditions relaxed for backpackers in Australia who hold working holiday visas may now be able to stay longer if they help out on farms that were affected by the bushfires.

Australia’s acting minister for immigration Alan Tudge says the new rules are about getting “as many boots on the ground as they need”. The new rules have been introduced with immediate effect.

“These hard-working Australians have been hit by the recent bushfires, but from today they can employ backpackers for six months longer, helping them at a critical time in the recovery effort, it means working holiday makers can help rebuild homes, fences and farms, they can get onto properties and help with demolition, land clearing, and repairing dams, roads and railways.”

Under the current working holiday & work and holiday systems, to be eligible for a second-year visa, backpackers must do 88 days of regional work in specific regions. Volunteer work is not counted and employers can only take on the same backpacker for six months.

Under the new plans, volunteer work in regions affected by the bushfires for periods of up to a year will now count towards a second and third-year visa.  The changes are designed to encourage working holidaymakers to live and work in disaster zones across Australia. There currently 45 communities class as disaster areas.

More than 200,000 working holiday visas were issued last year to people aged between 18 and 30 years.
