Along with increasing Australia’s migration intake to 195,000 for 2022/23 and spending A$36.1 million on 500 more staff to address visa backlogs, Minister for Home Affairs, Clare O’Neil and the Minister for Immigration, Andrew Giles said that Covid concessions allowing students to have work rights would be extended to 2023 when they will finish.

Laying the truth bare, the government recognised student visa holders as significant contributors to the labour market in Australia, ahead of permanent migrants and natural population growth. Although raising the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) was discussed, there were suggestions that any such raise would be indexed in order to not contribute to the current skills shortage.

Labour Market Testing was criticised during the summit, it requires Australian employers to advertise for positions in Australia before sponsoring overseas applicants for that position.

Announcements at the Jobs and Skills Summit made it clear that the current Australian government had plans to increase Australia’s permanent migration, moving away from a more temporary model to encouraging more migrants to stay in Australia by offering pathways to permanent residency and citizenship.

In 2022/23 there will be 34,000 regional places and 31,000 state and territory visa places, a total increase of 29,000. Since May, the government has brought in 180 new staff to help address the visa backlog and has processed almost 1.14 million overseas visa applications, with less than 1 million applications in the backlog, according to Reuters.

There are signs that waiting times will come down and it will be easier to get a graduate visa in the coming year for overseas migrants to live work and thrive in Australia. Now is the time to make your next move and start your migration journey.

A new occupation added to the Graduate Occupation List (GOL)in WA.

The occupation Retail Pharmacist (ANZSCO 251513) is now available on the Graduate Occupation List and eligible for State nomination through the Graduate stream.

This occupation is restricted to ‘Regional WA Only’, which means that you must be able to provide evidence of a job offer/contract of employment. The job offer/ contract must be in a location defined by the Commonwealth as Category 3 – Regional Centres and Other Regional Areas (not Perth and Mandurah) to be eligible for State nomination.

Following postcode areas are included: 6041 to 6044, 6084, 6207, 6213, 6215 to 6537, and 6560 to 6770.

UPDATED: Skilled Migration Western Australia Occupation Lists

Applicants who have a nominated occupation identified on the Western Australian skilled migration occupation list (WASMOL) or Graduate occupation list (GOL) may be eligible for Western Australian State nomination using one of the following visa subclasses:

• Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190); or
• Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 489)

The WASMOL is available to applicants who intend to use the general stream.

The GOL is available for applicants who intend to use the graduate stream.

The new GOL stream is available to:

• eligible university graduates who have gained a higher qualification and studied for at least two years in Western Australia at a Western Australian university;
• have an available occupation on the Graduate occupation list for the intended visa subclass; and
• can meet the Western Australian State Nomination Graduate stream eligibility criteria.

Notes on using the occupation lists

Occupations may have the following status.

• Available: occupation is available for nomination

• Restricted: occupation is under review and invitations to apply for State
  nomination will be limited pending the outcome of the review

• Closed: occupation is closed for invitations

The occupations identified on the occupation lists do not relate to any specific job vacancies, nor represent any guarantee of a job, but rather identify occupations that are considered a priority for the State. It is recommended that you research employment opportunities in Western Australia (in your occupation) before making the decision to migrate.   

You will need to have a skills assessment suitable for migration purposes in your nominated occupation.
