Invitations issued for State Nominated SC190 and Regional State-nominated SC491 (06 October 2022 and 08 December 2022 results) have not been published.
EasyMigrate is happy to write that this is the THIRD Invitation-round that has everyone excited- these last three quarterly invitation-rounds show a tremendous increase in the number of invitations being issued!
From December 2020 the Department of Immigration (DoHA) is issuing “invitations” on a quarterly basis.
There were 11,982 invitations published for the last October 2022 invitation round for SC189 applicants, with a cut-off date of October 2022 and a minimum points-score of 65 points. The previous invitation round (August 2022) had 12,200 invitations for Skilled Independent (SC189) at 65 points. But this time (December 2022) the SC189 invitations have almost tripled to 35,000 invitations!
In August 2022, the previous cut-off for Skilled Regional Family Sponsored (SC491) was 65 points. Last time (October 2022 round) –SC491 Family Sponsored: 847 applicants were invited, starting at 65 points with cut-off date October-2022.But this time there is a marked REDUCTION in Family Sponsored SC491 invitations : down from 847 to 120 invitations!
The “boom” months were between September 2018 and November 2018 at 4,350 invitations per month i.e. 13,050 invitations per quarter.
In the October 2018 invitation round, 70-point holders were also invited for SC189, but not for a long time after that – until the August 2022 round, the previous October 2022 round and then the current invitation round where the minimum score fell to 65 points in both SC189 Independent and in SC491 Family Sponsored invitations.
The number of monthly invitations used to hover around the “two thousand-plus” around 2017 good months. They went lower between November 2017 to June 2018 at about 305 “SkillSelect” invitations per fortnight for the EOI applicants!
From July 2018 the invitations were on par with the good months in previous year (2017).
The two rounds of October 2018 and November 2018 EXCEEDED our expectations at 4,340 invitations.
But the December 2018 round and January 2019 halved to 2,500 invitations. February 2019, March 2019 were FURTHER REDUCED to 1,500 invitations, and April 2019 plus May 2019 plus June 2019 invitations were a disappointing 100 invitations only.
July 2019 invitations had bounced back to 1,000 invitations. But August 2019 and September 2019 had fallen back to just 100 invitations! October 2019 invitations looked much better at 1,500 invitations. But November 2019 round was very poor at 250 invitations. The December 2019 was not much better – 250 invitations for SC189 and 200 invitations for SC491-Family-Sponsored.
The January 2020 and February 2020 invitations were better with 1,000 SC190 invitations and 300 to 500 SC491-Family-Sponsored invitations. The March 2020 round was good at 1,750 invitations for SC189 and 300 invitations for SC491. April 2020, May 2020 and June 2020 rounds were also very low.
The total number of invitations for the financial year (July 2019 to June 2020) was 7,780 for SC189 Independent and 1,480 for SC491 Family-Sponsored.
The total number of invitations for the financial year (July 2020 to June 2021) was 1,850 for SC189 Independent and 473 for SC491 Family-Sponsored.
Previous Program year (July-2020 to June-2021): July 2020 had 600 invitations. August 2020 had 200 invitations. Sept 2020 was better than the previous – at 350 invitations for SC189 and 150 invitations for SC491 Family Sponsored (total 500 invitations). Then the Dept of Home Affairs changed their invitation rounds to “quarterly” instead of monthly. The quarterly invitation (January 2021) included 200 invitations for SC189 and 163 invitations for SC491 Family Sponsored visas giving a total of 363 invitations. The quarterly round (April 2021) had 500 invitations for SC189 and 160 invitations for SC491 Family Sponsored (total 660 invitations).
Last Financial year 2021-22: Previous quarterly round (July 2021) had 500 invitations for SC189 and 250 invitations for SC491 Family Sponsored (total 750 invitations). The October 2021 round had only 200 invitations each for both SC189 and SC491 visas. Then the quarterly round (January 2022) had 200 invitations for SC189 and 200 invitations for SC491 Family Sponsored (total 400 invitations). The April 2022 round had 1000 invitations for SC189 and 500 invitations for SC491 Family Sponsored (total 1500 invitations).
The total number of invitations for the financial year (July 2021 to June 2022) was 1,900 for SC189 Independent and 1,150 for SC491 Family-Sponsored.
The August 2022 round had 12,200 invitations for SC189 and 466 invitations for SC491 Family Sponsored (total 12,666 invitations).
Previous Quarterly round (October 2022) saw the Dept of Immigration invitations return to the good old days! Number of invitations for SC189 were similar to the BOOM months of October and November 2018 and also the most recent BOOM quarter of August 2022 invitations! Then the October 2022 invitation round had a similar and staggering 11,982 invitations for SC189 and 847 invitations for SC491 Family Sponsored.
Now in the CURRENT ROUND (December 2022), the SC189 invitations have almost TRIPLED from the previous round levels – i.e. from 11,982 to 35,000 invitations. But the SC491 Family Sponsored invitations reduced from 847 to 120 invitations.
Invitation rounds for Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) and Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) – Family Sponsored visas are now run each quarter (three monthly). Next round is expected in March 2023. Dates for the rounds are subject to change.
Invitation numbers in each round may vary depending on the number of applications being processed by the Department.
Note: State or territory government nominations for Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) will not be impacted by the departmental invitation rounds.
The Government is closely monitoring migration and visa settings to ensure they are consistent with public health measures, are flexible and do not displace job opportunities for Australians. This program is implemented so that Australia can effectively respond to the immediate and subsequent impacts of COVID-19. As such, targeted invitation rounds have occurred since May 2020 – targeted towards specific occupations that are in demand. This has been further liberalised in the CURRENT round (December 2022) resulting in TRIPLE the number of SC189 invitations. You will note from the above table that the “occupations” selected has also been substantially expanded.
Recent developments around the word regarding the Coronavirus has had an effect on Dept of Immigration decision-makers. The “migration program” especially in the GSM and State-Nominated subclasses are “long term” processes taking 12-24 months to be finalised. We saw POSITIVE media-statements from the new Labour Ministers regarding ramping-up Australia’s migration programme as there are severe skill-shortages emerging. The West Australian Premier Mr Mark McGowan visited Italy / UK / Ireland in June 2022. The Deputy premier visited India and other Asian countries also in June 2022 to try and “recruit” skilled workers. The number of invitations issued in older 2021 and early 2022 rounds remained low compared to boom-years – but these last three INVITATION ROUNDS have brought the invitation-numbers back to where they used to be in the boom months of October 2018 and November 2018. This is a very pleasing development.
We are also pleased to report that there is a marked improvement in visa-grant numbers, as a result of Ministerial Directives to the Department of Immigration (DoHA – The Department of Home Affairs).
Because of the COVID19 pandemic, the recent rounds of invitations had been drastically cut. But with the opening of international borders as from November 2021 onwards, we have seen that migration-levels have returned to “normal” levels in a few month’s time.
The effect of “re-invitation” continues to plague the SkillSelect invitations program. In my previous articles, I had mentioned about the impact of “re-invitation”. Many applicants have changed to other countries or changed their plans but have not removed their Expressions of Interest (EOI). So they get invited, but they do not apply within the next 60 days. These applicants usually get “re-invited” as per Dept of Immigration rules one more time! I estimate this figure to be as high as 30-40% in many occupations. This severely affects the program. For example, out of the 1,000-odd invitations in a recent invitation-round only about 600-800 may have taken it up, 200-400 “invites” were wasted! This is something that the Department of Home Affairs has not been able to tackle yet.
Please keep in mind that for the SC491 FAMILY-SPONSORED visa, the applicant needs to have scored 50 points “independently” plus the 15 points from their family-sponsor (if invitations are starting at 65 points). From 16 November 2019 onwards the new Subclass 491 Regional Family-Sponsored visa has come into effect, replacing the SC489 family-Sponsored.

Invitations issued for State Nominated SC190 and Regional State-nominated SC491 (06 October 2022 results) have not been published.
EasyMigrate is happy to write that this is the SECOND Invitation-round that has everyone excited- these last two quarterly invitation-rounds show a tremendous increase in the number of invitations being issued!
From December 2020 the Department of Immigration (DoHA) is issuing “invitations” on a quarterly basis.
There were 17,714 invitations published for this October 2022 invitation round for SC189 applicants, with a cut-off date of October 2022 and a minimum points-score of 65 points. The previous invitation round (August 2022) had 12,200 invitations for Skilled Independent (SC189) at 65 points.
In August 2022, the previous cut-off for Skilled Regional Family Sponsored (SC491) was 65 points. This time (October 2022 round) –SC491 Family Sponsored: 818 applicants were invited, starting at 65 points with cut-off date October-2022.
The “boom” months were between September 2018 and November 2018 at 4,350 invitations per month.
In the October 2018 invitation round, 70-point holders were also invited for SC189, but not for a long time after that – until the last August 2022 round and then the current invitation round where the minimum score fell to 65 points in both SC189 Independent and in SC491 Family Sponsored invitations.
The total number of invitations for the financial year (July 2020 to June 2021) was 1,690 for SC189 Independent and 743 for SC491 Family-Sponsored, as follows:
Last Program year (July-2020 to June-2021): July 2020 had 600 invitations.
Financial year 2021-22: Previous quarterly round (July 2021) had 500 invitations for SC189 and 250 invitations for SC491 Family Sponsored (total 750 invitations). The October 2021 round had only 200 invitations each for both SC189 and SC491 visas. Then the quarterly round (January 2022) had 200 invitations for SC189 and 200 invitations for SC491 Family Sponsored (total 400 invitations).
The April 2022 round had 1000 invitations for SC189 and 500 invitations for SC491 Family Sponsored (total 400 invitations). The August 2022 round had 12,200 invitations for SC189 and 466 invitations for SC491 Family Sponsored (total 12,666 invitations).
Current Quarterly round (October 2022) has seen the Dept of Immigration invitations return to the good old days! Number of invitations for SC189 are similar to the BOOM months of October and November 2018 and also the most recent BOOM quarter of August 2022 invitations! This invitation round has a similar and staggering 11,714 invitations for SC189 and 818 invitations for SC491 Family Sponsored.
Invitation rounds for Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) and Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) – Family Sponsored visas are now run each quarter (three monthly). Next round is expected in January 2023.
Recent developments around the word regarding the Coronavirus has had an effect on Dept of Immigration decision-makers. The “migration program” especially in the GSM and State-Nominated subclasses are “long term” processes taking 12-24 months to be finalised. We are seeing POSITIVE media-statements from the Ministers regarding ramping-up Australia’s migration programme as there are severe skill-shortages emerging. The West Australian Premier Mr Mark McGowan visited Italy / UK / Ireland in June 2022. The Deputy premier visited India and other Asian countries also in June 2022 to try and “recruit” skilled workers. But the number of invitations issued in previous rounds is low compared to boom-years – but this INVITATION ROUND has brought the invitation-numbers back to where they used to be in the boom months of October 2018 and November 2018. This is a very pleasing development.

Invitations issued for State Nominated SC190 and Regional State-nominated SC491 (22 August 2022 results) have not been published.
From December 2020 the Department of Immigration (DoHA) is issuing “invitations” on a quarterly basis.
There were 12,200 invitations published for this August 2022 invitation round for SC189 applicants, with a cut-off date of August 2022 and a minimum points-score of 65 points. The previous invitation round (April 2022) had 1000 invitations for Skilled Independent (SC189) at 85 points.
In January 2022, the previous cut-off for Skilled Regional Family Sponsored (SC491) was 80 points. This time (August 2022 round) – 466 SC491 Family Sponsored applicants were invited, starting at 65 points with cut-off date August-2022.
The “boom” months were between September 2018 and November 2018 at 4,350 invitations per month.
In the October 2018 invitation round, 70-point holders were also invited for SC189, but not for a long time after that – until this current invitation round where the minimum score fell to 65 points in both SC189 Independent and in SC491 Family Sponsored invitations. The October 2020 Budget had placed substantial restrictions / quotas on various visa classes. This had reduced the available quota for invitations.
The total number of invitations for the financial year (July 2020 to June 2021) was 1,690 for SC189 Independent and 743 for SC491 Family-Sponsored, as follows:
Last Program year (July-2020 to June-2021): July 2020 had 600 invitations.
The April 2022 round had 1000 invitations for SC189 and 500 invitations for SC491 Family Sponsored (total 400 invitations)
Current Quarterly round (August 2022) has seen the Dept of Immigration invitations return to the good old days! Number of invitations for SC189 are similar to the BOOM months of October and November 2018! This invitation round was a staggering 12,200 invitations for SC189 and 466 invitations for SC491 Family Sponsored.
Invitation rounds for Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) and Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) – Family Sponsored visas are now run each quarter (three monthly). Next round is expected in October 2022.

For example, out of the 1,000-odd invitations in January 2020 only about 600-800 may have taken it up, 200-400 “invites” were wasted!

Invitations issued for State Nominated SC190 and Regional State-nominated SC491 (21 January 2022 results have not been published).
Please note that as from December 2020 the Department of Immigration (DoHA) is only issuing “invitations” on a quarterly basis.
There were 200 invitations published for this January 2022 invitation round for SC189 applicants, with a cut-off date of September 2021 and a minimum points-score of 90 points. The previous invitation round (October 2021) had 200 invitations for Skilled Independent (SC189) at 90 points.
In October 2021, the previous cut-off for Skilled Regional Family Sponsored (SC491) was 80 points. This time (January 2022 round) – 200 SC491 Family Sponsored applicants were invited, starting at 80 points with cut-off date January-2022.
The “boom” months were between September 2018 and November 2018 at 4,350 invitations per month.
In the October 2018 invitation round, 70-point holders were also invited for SC189, but not anymore. The October 2020 Budget had placed substantial restrictions / quotas on various visa classes. This had reduced the available quota for invitations.
For SC189 Independent Visa: Accountants, Auditors, Company Secretaries and Corporate Treasurers were not invited at all.
For SC491 Family-sponsored Visa: Accountants, Auditors, Company Secretaries and Corporate Treasurers were not invited at all.
For SC189 Independent Visa: Electronics Engineers were not invited at all.
For SC491 Family-sponsored Visa: Electronics Engineers were not invited at all.
For SC189 Independent Visa: Industrial, Mechanical and Production Engineers were invited not invited at all.
For SC491 Family-sponsored Visa: Industrial, Mechanical and Production Engineers were not invited at all.
For SC189 Independent Visa: Other Engineering Professionals were not invited at all.
For SC491 Family-sponsored Visa: Other Engineering Professionals were not invited at all.
For SC189 Independent Visa: ICT Business and System Analysts, Software and Application Programmers, Computer Network Professionals were not invited at all.
For SC491 Family-sponsored Visa: : ICT Business and System Analysts, Software and Application Programmers, Computer Network Professionals were not invited at all.
The total number of invitations for the financial year (July 2020 to June 2021) was 1,690 for SC189 Independent and 743 for SC491 Family-Sponsored, as follows:
Last Program year (July-2020 to June-2021): July 2020 had 600 invitations.
New Financial year 2021-22: Previous quarterly round (July 2021) had 500 invitations for SC189 and 250 invitations for SC491 Family Sponsored (total 750 invitations). The October 2021 round had only 200 invitations each for both SC189 and SC491 visas.
Current quarterly round (January 2022) has 200 invitations for SC189 and 200 invitations for SC491 Family Sponsored (total 400 invitations).
Invitation rounds for Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) and Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) – Family Sponsored visas are now anticipated to be run each quarter (three monthly). Next round is expected in April 2022. Dates for the rounds are subject to change.
Invitation numbers in each round may vary depending on the number of applications being processed by the Department.
Note: State or territory government nominations for Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) will not be impacted by the departmental invitation rounds.
The Government is closely monitoring migration and visa settings to ensure they are consistent with public health measures, are flexible and do not displace job opportunities for Australians, so that Australia can effectively respond to the immediate and subsequent impacts of COVID-19. As such, targeted invitation rounds have occurred since May 2020.
But the number of invitations issued in recent rounds is poor.
Because of the COVID19 pandemic, the current rounds of invitations have been drastically cut. But with the opening of international borders as from November 2021 onwards, we expect that migration-levels will return to “normal” levels in a few month’s time.
For example, out of the 1,000-odd invitations in January 2020 only about 600-800 may have taken it up, 200-400 “invites” were wasted!

Please note that as from December 2020 the Department of Immigration (DoHA) is only issuing “invitations” on a quarterly basis.
There were 200 invitations published for this July 2021 invitation round for SC189 applicants, with a cut-off date of November 2020 and a minimum points-score of 90 points. The previous invitation round (July 2021) had 500 invitations for Skilled Independent (SC189) at 80 points.
In July 2021, the previous cut-off for Skilled Regional Family Sponsored (SC491) was 65 points. This time (Oct 2021 round) – 200 SC491 Family Sponsored applicants were invited, starting at 80 points with cut-off date April-2020.

For SC491 Family-sponsored Visa: : ICT Business and System Analysts, Software and Application Programmers, Computer Network Professionals were not invited at all.
The total number of invitations for the financial year (July 2020 to June 2021) was 1,690 for SC189 Independent and 743 for SC491 Family-Sponsored, as follows:
Last Program year (July-2020 to June-2021): July 2020 had 600 invitations.
New Financial year 2021-22: Previous quarterly round (July 2021) had 500 invitations for SC189 and 250 invitations for SC491 Family Sponsored (total 750 invitations).
Current quarterly round (Oct 2021) had 200 invitations for SC189 and 200 invitations for SC491 Family Sponsored (total 400 invitations).
Invitation rounds for Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) and Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) – Family Sponsored visas are now anticipated to be run each quarter (three monthly). Next round is expected in January 2022.
Recent developments around the word regarding the Coronavirus is having an effect on Dept of Immigration decision-makers. As the “migration program” especially in the GSM and State-Nominated subclasses are “long term” processes taking 12-24 months to be finalised, we hope that the DoHA management keeps these subclasses ongoing and unaffected. But the number of invitations issued in recent rounds is poor.
Because of the COVID19 pandemic, the current rounds of invitations have been drastically cut. But with the opening of international borders as from November 2021 onwards, we expect that migration-levels will return to “normal” levels in a few month’s time.
For example, out of the 1,000-odd invitations in January 2020 only about 600-800 may have taken it up, 200-400 “invites” were wasted!

Please note that as from December 2020 the Department of Immigration (DoHA) is only issuing “invitations” on a quarterly basis.
There were 500 invitations published for this April 2021 invitation round for SC189 applicants, with a cut-off date of July 2019 and a minimum points-score of 80 points. The previous invitation round (January 2021) had 200 invitations for Skilled Independent (SC189) at 65 points with a cut-off date April 2020.
The previous cut-off for Skilled Regional Family Sponsored (SC491) was 65 points, cut-off date November 2020 in previous invitation round (January 2021). This time (April 2021 round) – 160 SC491 Family Sponsored applicants were invited, starting at 65 points with cut-off date March-2021.
The “boom” months were between September 2018 and November 2018 at 4,350 invitations per month.
In the October 2018 invitation round, 70-point holders were also invited for SC189, but not anymore. The new October 2020 Budget has placed restrictions / quotas on various visa classes. This has reduced the available quota for invitations.
For SC189 Independent Visa: Industrial, Mechanical and Production Engineers were invited at 80 points, with cut-off date July 2019.
For SC491 Family-sponsored Visa: Industrial, Mechanical and Production Engineers were not invited at all.
For SC189 Independent Visa: Other Engineering Professionals were invited at 90 points with cut-off date May 2020.
For SC491 Family-sponsored Visa: Other Engineering Professionals were invited at 70 points with cut-off date Sept 2020.
Electronics Engineers did not get invited for SC189 in the September 2019 or October 2019. In December 2019 they had been invited at 95 points or more, cut-off date was 04-06-2019. Electronics Engineers have been invited at 95 points, cut-off date is 20-03-2020. SC491 Family-Sponsored applicants were invited for Electronic Engineer occupation at 95 points, cut-off date 18-03-2020. In this invitation round, they have not been invited at all (SC189 / SC491).
Current Program year 2020-2021: July 2020 had 600 invitations. August 2020 had 200 invitations. Sept 2020) was better than the previous – at 350 invitations for SC189 and 150 invitations for SC491 Family Sponsored (total 500 invitations). Then the Dept of Home Affairs changed their invitation rounds to “quarterly” instead of monthly. The previous quarterly invitation (January 2021) included 200 invitations for SC189 and 163 invitations for SC491 Family Sponsored visas giving a total of 363 invitations. Compared to this, the current quarterly round (21 April 2021) has 500 invitations for SC189 and 160 invitations for SC491 Family Sponsored (total 660 invitations)
Invitation rounds for Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) and Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) – Family Sponsored visas are now anticipated to be run each quarter (three monthly). Next round is expected in July 2021.
Because of the COVID19 pandemic, the current rounds of invitations have been drastically cut.
These applicants usually get “re-invited” as per the Dept of Immigration rules one more time! I estimate this figure to be as high as 30-40% in many occupations. This severely affects the program. For example, out of the 1,000-odd invitations in January 2020 only about 600-800 may take it up, 200-400 “invites” are wasted!
Our EasyMigrate website has statistics for previous SkillSelect Invitation Round Results. My ongoing analysis commencing October 2017 invitation round and right up to the most recent invitation rounds are all available on our website.
The table below shows the number of invitations issued in the SkillSelect invitation round on 21 April 2021 – these are copied from Dept of Home Affairs website and appended below for your convenience:
Visa subclass | Number |
---|---|
Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) | 500 |
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) – Family Sponsored) | 160 |
The highest ranked clients by points score are invited to apply for the relevant visa. For clients who have equal points scores, the time at which they reached their points score for that subclass (referred to as the date of effect) determines their order of invitation. Expressions of Interest with earlier dates of effect are invited before later dates.
Visa subclass | Minimum points score | Latest date of effect |
---|---|---|
Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) | 80 | 07/2019 |
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) – Family Sponsored) | 65 | 03/2021 |
Due to high levels of demand, and in keeping with previous program years, the below occupation groups will be subject to pro rata arrangements to ensure availability of invitations across the program year.
SkillSelect first allocates available places to Skilled – Independent visas (subclass 189), and thereafter the remaining to Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) – Family Sponsored. If all places are taken up by subclass 189 visas then there will be no invitations issued for subclass 491 visas in these occupations.

]]>If you don’t think you are in a regional area, don’t worry!
Regional areas include all of Australia except Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, so there is a good chance you already live in one.
If you are a student who has lived in Perth, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Lake Macquarie, Illawarra, Geelong, Newcastle, Wollongong, Adelaide, Hobart or Canberra for 2 years you can apply for a 1 year 485 Temporary Graduate visa extension.
If you have lived and studied in any area of Australia not mentioned above for 2 years, you can apply for a 2 year visa extension.
While on the 1 or 2 year extension you must reside in the regional area you applied from, so if you are looking for another visa option to stay in Australia this may be the opportunity you are looking for.
The definition of regional Australia for this purpose will be the same as the definition for skilled migration – all of Australia excluding Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane (Perth and Gold Coast are classified as regional areas).
From 2021, Temporary Graduate visa (TGV) holders (post-study work stream) who have graduated from a regional educational institution and have lived in regional Australia on their first TGV will be eligible for a second TGV.
Those eligible for a second TGV will be required to remain in a regional area for the duration of their new visa.
Eligibility will include international students who studied at a regional campus of a metropolitan university.
· International graduates who have studied and lived in Category 2 will be eligible for an additional 1 year on a second Temporary Graduate visa.
· International graduates who have studied and lived in Category 3 will be eligible for an additional 2 years on a second Temporary Graduate visa.
The initiative will provide an additional incentive for international students to study at a regional institution and to live in regional areas post-study, boosting diversity and prosperity in regional Australia.
At the same time, it will help ease growing infrastructure pressures in our major cities.
There is no change to Student visas. This option is available as an initiative for international students to study and live in regional Australia
